Prologue
Cris (the main character) comes from village several miles away from muari, a sorceress's cottage. In this village female and male all have to take a test of there strength and intelligence when the reach age. This determines how high of an honor, placement they have in the community. THAT is determined by stories the people bring back, how long there gone, and artifacts brought back. For example if you bring back a few bear heads you'll obviously get named a great hunter and be given respect. If you are gone for a long time then you are considered brave and persistent, to wonderful traits which could and would help you if you decided to run for a political position. If you traveled far enough to another village and brought something back that is unique to that village you would be considered a good traveler, not much respect but some. If you brought back amazing tales -true or false- you would train for the position of Story Teller, and maybe take the place of the previous story teller after he/she dies. If you however, stay as close as you can to the village (your family would escort you to about two miles from the village in deep forest.) or come back ASAP (there's no limit to how soon you get back) you would become somewhat of an outcast in the village and disrespected by most, perhaps even the kids. So there's a lot of pressure on the villagers to get high standings.
Cris is happy being normal and decides to travel afar. Cris keeps going straight forward, thinking that s/he (you decide! i did it in first person so that guy or girl, anyone would be comfortable reading it. However, ***SPOILER*** at the end of the book the gender's revealed ***SPOILER END***) would have to come to a town or somewhere sooner or later. Instead he got to a part of the ever-lasting forest that had no game or water. Cris didn't care about socialites any more, cris was simply hungary and thirsty then he sees a cottage... and well you can read the rest. |
